The German Resistance Memorial Center and the story of Georg Elser.
Переглядів 5521 день тому
The man who tried to assinnate Hitler in 1939, Georg Elser, is featured in the German Resistance Memorial Center, in Berlin, Germany. It was here, the Army High Command building during World War II was also the place where four co-conspiritors of the 20 July 1944 coup attempt were executed. The Memorial Centre is a place for reading with very little in the way of exhibits. But like the Topograp...

Views from the cycle ride from Myrdal to Flåm, Norway.
Переглядів 2472 місяці тому
If you are visiting Flam in Norway, the 'normal' thing to do is to buy a return train ticket on the world famous and admittedly quite spectacular, Flåmsbana Railway. One alternative, and the once I chose, was to take the trian up (sit on the right) and them cycle down. This video shows varius views on the way down including the Flam zipline, and lots of stunning scenic views.
The Flam Zipline in Norway.

The Flam zipline is the longest in Scandanavia. While most people take the Flåmsbana train both up and back down the valley from near Myrdal, one option is to take the train up, ride the Flåm zipline down from about 900m to 600m and then rent a bicyle to return to Flåm. Relative costs: I took the train up and rented a bike down from Myrdal. The train cost one way 700 NOR (£31.50/US$38) and the ...

The day starts very overcast and I head up to the Aksla viewpoint. This involved a small hill followed by 418 steps. Hard work. It is a tough climb but the alternatives include many tour buses, a local taxi or even a rental e-bike. The second part of the vid...

Ever wondered how much 'stuff' a Brita filter removed from your water?
Переглядів 6152 місяці тому
I decided to test how effectively Brita filters (in this case Maxtra Pro) removed 'stuff' from tap water by measuring the mass of filters over different periods of time. I used 3 filters over different periods of time: 30 days (the recommended 'life' of a filter), 45 days and 60 days. The control was a brand new filter. All four filters were dried in the same place over a period of weeks in an ...

Tools of the trade that the Stasi learned from the Nazi Gestapos. I find it to be an oxymoron when both the DDR/Soviet Union spoke against "Fascism" when it is they themselves practiced it on a daily basis. When you see tyrannical governments preach against "fascism", they're actually projecting themselves on others, they're too blind and too stupid to see for who and what they really are. It's really sad.

13:47 I know this one, the cloth would be tightly wrapped on the seat in the interrogation room. They would make (forced) the person being interrogated to have their hands faced down on the seat while sitting on their hands. This causes the hands to sweat into the cloth. After the interrogation is completed, the prisoner leaves the room while the interrogating officer removes the cloth from the seat and placed inside the jar and tightly sealed. Should there be a possible event, after the prisoner has been released from prison decides to make an escape from East Germany, the cloth would be used as a means of tracking the escapee from the scent left on the cloth for search hound dogs to track his whereabouts in hopes of capturing him. The Stasis were very through in everything when it comes to controlling the population as well as individuals. They don't miss any details.

So Eric Honecker was actually a Communist?? That's an interesting twist. I wonder how he dodged the bullet from the Nazi party? Generally any German that is a member of the Communist party would have faced execution.

This seems to have been " tidied. " up since i visited it in 2004 as there was a couple of sections where commonwealth and german soldiers were buried together in a small circle . You also failed to mention that the first british soldier and the last German soldier killed during the great war are buried here. My apologies I had not seen part 2 when you identified the soldiers of importance.

With it was a wallet containing photos, postcards of a german soldier. I have had them with me since 2000 after my dad died. Musteteer Alois Sperlich. Good job in the video visually covering the main points of the battle of the monocacy. The best points were that union general Lew Wallace was in command in Baltimore and took the initiative to send his forces to monocacy. The monocacy rivers left bank was the extreme left of Wallace's command authority and he placed his troops there to contest the rebels. On the extreme left of the Union line where the majority of the attacks took place was the union regulars of the 6th Corps. To the middle and right were the Maryland and I believe Ohio troops who had only been called up recently and were the most inexperienced Union forces. The only union battery there was HQs in Baltimore and this was the only time they fired their peices in the war. The division of the 6th Corps were the regulars who took the brunt of the multiple attacks first of Confederate cavalry who fought dismounted. The cavalry's big mistake was to attack as if marching on parade and walked right into devastating union fire from behind the fence line which offered the union regulars good cover. Plus it didn't help that dismounted cavalry was only 75 percent was involved in the 1st attack while every 4th trooper had to hold onto the reigns of the other 3 troopers horses. Eventually after a number of attacks the Confederate attacks built up in greater numbers of both infantry and some remaining cavalry forcing the Union forces back 2 times. It is believed that the smaller union forces were never sent to win a battle here but slow down and delay the Confederates. In the late afternoon the union forces were driven back and retreated while the Confederates held the field. After the battle early's rebels spent a lot of precious time to get moving again. Before leaving the area Confederates even had their artillery try to destroy the B and O's railroad bridge across the monocacy but the iron railroad bridge could not be destroyed. When they got near Washington and outside of fort Stephens it was filled with union defenders. A few days before the fort was so lightly defended that an earlier attack might have taken it. With the B and O railroad no very far away reinforcements were sent there.

If you are on a cruise, the cruise company will have a shuttle bus from the train station to the port. In July 2024 MSC had the option of going on a bus all the way or taking a dedicated river bus across the river (the option I chose) then a short bus to the port. Both cost the same. If not on a cruise then there are regular river buses which should stop at the nearest stop (Kiel- Dietrichsdorfer Brücke).

I have thought a great deal about genocide lately. God bless the Jewish people who have protested the genocide in Gaza and the West Bank. As a Catholic with a grandmother who lost all her people in the Armenian Holocaust and a father who fought the Nazis during the genocide of six million Jewish people, would you consider having an exhibit on the 2579 Catholic Priests who were sentenced to Dachau. I want tol learn about the character and strength of people who stand against genocide.
